How to Brush on the Foreground / Background
Written By Philipp Brockerhoff

With the current Layers system, the Brush Tool paints on whichever Brush Layer is currently selected in the Layers Panel.
Previously, the Brush Tool included a toggle for switching between the Foreground and Background. Since maps can now contain multiple Brush Layers, layer selection is handled directly through the Layers Panel instead.
Selecting a Brush Layer
To paint on the Foreground or Background:
Open the Layers Panel.
Select the Foreground (Land) or Background (Water) Brush Layer.
Open the Brush Tool and paint normally.
The Brush Tool will apply textures and colors to the selected Brush Layer.
You can use the same workflow for any additional Brush Layers you create.

Tips
Keep the Layers Panel expanded while painting. This makes it easier to see which Brush Layer is currently selected and helps prevent accidentally painting on the wrong layer.
