How to Make a Map Larger

Inkarnate does not use a fixed canvas size in the same way as traditional image editing software.

Instead of increasing the canvas dimensions, you make a map cover a larger area by reducing the Map Scale. This makes Stamps, textures, and other map content appear smaller relative to the map, allowing more content to fit into the same map area.

You can then export the map at a high resolution to preserve detail.

Changing the Map Scale

Use Resize Map to change the scale of an existing map. When you decrease the Map Scale:

  • Existing map content becomes smaller relative to the map.

  • More terrain and objects can fit into the available area.

  • The map effectively represents a larger region.

For example, if mountains and cities appear half as large as before, you can fit roughly twice as much landscape across the same map.

Resizing creates a new copy of the map, so the original remains unchanged.

How This Differs From Other Image Editors

In many image editing applications, making a larger map means increasing the canvas dimensions while keeping objects at the same size.

Inkarnate approaches this differently:

  • Instead of making the canvas larger, make the map content smaller using Map Scale.

  • Build the larger map using the newly available space.

  • Export at a high resolution when you need a large or detailed final image.

This allows the same map to represent anything from a small region to an entire world without requiring you to choose a fixed pixel-based canvas size while editing.

Tips

  • Reduce the Map Scale when you need more space for your world or region.

  • Use a higher export resolution when a large-scale map contains many small details.

  • Keep the original map after resizing until you’re satisfied with the resized copy.
