Map Loading Issues

If a map does not load correctly, the issue can have several causes, including browser extensions, cached data, limited system resources, connection problems, or an unsupported older map format.

Try the troubleshooting steps below before contacting Support.

Troubleshooting Steps

The following steps apply when using Inkarnate in a web browser. Try the following:

  • Open Inkarnate in an Incognito or Private browsing window. If the map loads there, a browser extension or stored browser data may be interfering with Inkarnate.

  • Clear your browser cache, then refresh Inkarnate or restart your browser.

  • Try opening the map at a lower Editing Resolution. From the Maps page, open the map’s menu and select Open at Resolution.

  • Close unnecessary browser tabs and applications to free up system resources.

  • Avoid switching browser tabs while a map is loading, saving, or exporting.

If possible, also try a different supported browser or the Inkarnate desktop application to determine whether the issue is specific to your current browser.

Very Old Maps

Maps created before May 2020 may use an older map format that is no longer supported by the current editor.

If a very old map consistently fails to load even after trying the steps above, contact Support so the map can be investigated.

Check for Browser Errors

If the map still does not load, check whether your browser reports an error. These errors can help Support determine what is causing the problem.

In Chrome:

  1. Close unnecessary windows and applications.

  2. Open a new Chrome window.

  3. Open Developer Tools using Ctrl + Shift + I on Windows or Cmd + Option + I on macOS.

  4. Select the Console tab.

  5. Open Inkarnate and try loading the affected map.

  6. Look for any red error messages that appear when the loading fails.

If you see red errors, take a screenshot that includes the error messages

Still Having Problems?

If the map still cannot be loaded, create a Support Ticket and include:

  • A link to or the name of the affected map (Example: inkarnate.com/maps/edit/XXX)

  • What happens when you try to open it.

  • Which troubleshooting steps you already tried.

  • A screenshot of any red errors shown in the browser Console.

This information can help Support identify the cause more quickly.
