Editor Performance Issues

Performance issues in the editor can have several causes, including browser settings, active Filters, amount of assets present on the map, limited system resources, or working at a high Editing Resolution.

Try the steps below to improve editor performance and identify the cause.

Check Your Browser and System

Before changing anything in the editor, check your browser and device setup:

  • Disable browser extensions: Extensions can interfere with the editor. Try opening Inkarnate in a Private or Incognito window to test without most extensions. Some browsers may still allow extensions in private mode, so disable them manually if needed.

  • Enable hardware acceleration: This allows your browser to use the GPU and can significantly improve editor performance. Enable hardware acceleration in your browser settings and restart the browser.

  • Close unnecessary applications and browser tabs: Freeing CPU and memory can improve performance, especially on larger maps.

  • Check firewall or security software: Security software can sometimes interfere with or slow down browser applications.

Improve Performance in the Editor

The following changes can reduce the amount of processing required while editing:

  • Disable Filters while editing: Filter Layers can significantly affect performance. Enable them again when you need to preview or export the finished map.

  • Work at a lower Editing Resolution: Higher resolutions require more system resources. From the Maps page, open the map menu and select Open at Resolution to choose a lower resolution.

  • Save and refresh during long editing sessions: If performance gradually becomes worse over time, save your map and refresh the editor.

If Performance Issues Continue

If the editor is still slow after trying the steps above:

  • Try a different supported browser or the Inkarnate desktop application.

  • Restart your device.

  • Check whether the issue affects only one map or all maps. If only one map is affected, its complexity may be contributing to the problem.

If the issue persists, contact Support and include information about your browser, device, affected map, and the troubleshooting steps you already tried.

Tips

  • Keep Filters disabled while actively editing complex maps.

  • Use a lower Editing Resolution for large or detailed maps, then export at a higher resolution when finished.

  • Close other resource-intensive applications while working on complex maps.
