Styles

A Style is a collection of Packs that share a common visual style, scale, and scene behavior. Assets within the same Style are generally designed to work together.

Users select a Style when creating a map, but Assets from different Styles can still be mixed within the same map.

Creating a Style

To create a Style:

  1. Open the Art Manager.

  2. Select the Plus button in the Hierarchy Panel.

  3. Select Style.

  4. Enter the Style details and configure its properties.

You can also create a Style while uploading Assets.

Style Properties

Select a Style in the Hierarchy Panel to view and edit its properties in the Details Panel. Styles provide the following properties:

  • Name: Identifies the Style throughout the Art Manager and Catalog.

  • Description: Explains the Style’s visual direction, intended use, scale, or compatibility with other content.

  • Style Scale: Defines the default scale of Assets within the Style. This multiplier determines how large newly placed Stamps appear when using a scale of 100 in the editor.

  • Default Grid Size: Defines the default grid size when creating a new map using the Style.

  • Example Images: Showcase the Style’s visual appearance and intended use. Choose representative examples that clearly demonstrate the types of maps the Style is designed for.

  • Default Assets: Defines the default Assets used when creating a new map. Defaults can be configured for the Stamp Tool, Brush Tool, Foreground Layer, and Background Layer. If no suitable default is configured, Inkarnate uses the first available Asset of the required type. If no Texture is available, the Background Layer and Brush Tool default to black, while the Foreground Layer defaults to white.

Object Ordering

Each Style defines how Objects are ordered within the same Object Layer. The selected ordering mode is applied when a map is created with that Style and cannot be changed later.

  • Top Down: Objects are ordered by their position in the Objects Panel. Newly placed Objects appear above older Objects by default.

  • Perspective: Objects are ordered according to the vertical position on the canvas of their anchor point. Objects positioned lower in the scene render in front of Objects positioned higher in the scene.

Object ordering applies to all Objects in the map, including Assets from other Styles.

Perspective: The red and blue dots represent the asset’s anchor point.

Packs without a Style

Packs do not need to belong to a Style. Packs without a Style can be used for Assets that work across multiple visual styles, such as light effects, Clip Masks, or universal Stroke Assets.

Assets can also exist without belonging to a Pack. These appear in the Assets section and can be assigned to a Pack later.

Tips

  • Organize Packs containing Assets intended to be used together into the same Style.

  • Use representative example images so users can quickly understand the Style’s intended appearance.

  • Adjust the Style Scale when you want your Assets to match the size of another Style so they can be used together seamlessly.
