Brush Presets

Written By Philipp Brockerhoff

Brush Presets define how the Brush Tool applies texture or color while drawing. They control the brush tip, spacing, scattering, and optional pen input such as pressure and tilt. Use Brush Presets to create different painting styles or optimize the brush for specific tasks. Presets can be customized, named, and saved for reuse.

Paid Feature

The Brush Presets are available with a paid subscription.

Editing a Brush Preset

Select a Brush Preset, then click Edit Brush to customize its behavior.

Brush Properties

Brush Properties control how the brush applies paint along a stroke.

  • Brush Size: Controls the size of the brush tip.

  • Size Jitter: Randomly varies the size of each brush dab. For example, a Brush Size of 100 with a Size Jitter of 10 produces brush dabs between 90 and 110.

  • Opacity: Controls the opacity of each brush dab.

  • Opacity Jitter: Randomly varies the opacity of each brush dab.

  • Softness: Controls how soft or hard the edge of the brush appears. This setting is only available for the default circular brush.

  • Spacing: Controls the distance between consecutive brush dabs. Lower values create smoother, more continuous strokes, while higher values produce more distinct brush dabs.

  • Scatter: Randomly offsets each brush dab perpendicular to the drawing direction, creating a more scattered appearance.

Pen Dynamics

Pen Dynamics allow drawing tablets to control brush properties using pen input.

The following inputs are available:

  • Pressure: Varies the selected property based on how hard the pen is pressed.

  • Tilt: Varies the selected property based on the angle of the pen.

  • None: Disables pen input for the selected property.

Brush Size and Opacity can each be controlled independently.

When Pen Dynamics are enabled, the slider changes to a range control. The two handles define the minimum and maximum values that can be reached using pressure or pen tilt.

Saving Presets

After adjusting the brush settings, enter a name to save the configuration as a new Brush Preset. Saved presets can be selected at any time and are available in all maps.

Tips

  • Combine Scatter with Size Jitter to create more natural-looking vegetation, rocks, and other organic textures.

  • Use Pressure-sensitive Size with a drawing tablet to smoothly vary the width of your brush stroke while painting.
